Montori Hughes loses infant daughter

The 3-month-old daughter of Colts defensive lineman Montori Hughes died last week. The second-year pro is on extended leave from the team.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano opened his Thursday press conference with the heartbreaking news that the 3-month-old daughter of defensive lineman Montori Hughes died last week.

The second-year pro is on extended leave after the passing of Maveah Alice Hughes, who earlier this month had accompanied her mother, Hughes girlfriend Leigh Burton, to training camp at Anderson University.

Pagano said the infant “was perfectly fine” during the camp visit, but recently “became ill and they lost their child.

“I can’t imagine,” Pagano said. “No parent should have to bury a child. We all go through circumstances. This is an extremely, extremely difficult time for Montori and his family. But we’ve got his back and we’ll get through this thing as a family, like we get through anything.”

Hughes, a fifth-round selection a year ago, is a reserve nose tackle. He had seven tackles in four games as a rookie.
