A talented pair of players out of Tulsa learned that they were being released by the Colts on Monday in addition to a recent roster addition who had made a nice showing in the few weeks of opportuntity that the team had provided to him.
Wide receivers Montiese Culton and Ashlan Davis played together at Tulsa, roomed together at the Colts training camp in Terre Haute, and now have been released together as well. As the team trimmed the roster to get down to 75 players as required by the league, Culton and Davis were surprise cuts. Culton was on the team's practice squad last year, and Davis had shown some real flashes of talent as a returns specialist.
Another surprise cut was safety Jammal Lord, who the Colts brought in to camp roughly a week prior to their first preseason game against the Rams. Lord picked up the defensive scheme quickly, contributing well with three tackles against the Rams while logging extensive playing time. He was also noticeably active on special teams.
Also waived by the Colts on Monday were a number of recent additions to the roster who were brought in to help provide depth due to injuries: defensive end Phillip Alexander, defensive lineman Jason Davis, defensive tackle Kader Drame, defensive back Shannon Fitzhugh, and defensive lineman Mark Word.
Tight end Joey Hawkins and defensive end Justin Brown were also released. They were in the 2005 Colts camp as undrafted free agents and were assigned to NFL Europe this spring. Hawkins was cut by his team prior to the start of the season, but Brown made 20 tackles plus two sacks for the Frankfurt Galaxy.
NFL teams have to cut their rosters to 53 players by September 2nd prior to forming 8-man practice squads beginning September 3rd.
