In another surprise roster move, the Colts released Dan Sheldon to make room for running back…
NFC Team Gives Sheldon a Tryout
It didn't take former Colts wide receiver and returns specialist Dan Sheldon long to get a look from another prospective employer. ColtPower has learned that he has already worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We haven't been able to confirm as to whether or not the team has offered him a contract as of yet. Sheldon's talent as a punt returns specialist is of particular interest to the Buccaneers. They've tried numerous players on both kickoff and punt returns during the preseason without having any one of them emerge as an exceptional performer. On kickoffs, they've tried CB James Patrick (1-24), DB Torrie Cox (1-49), and a pair of running backs -- Derek Watson who averaged 24.2 yards on four returns and Jacque Lewis who returned four for an average of 16.2 yards. Watson appears to be capable of handling the kickoffs, but it's another story in the punt return area. On punts, Lewis got one try and brought it back for eight yards, while a pair of wide receivers -- Paris Warren and Mark Jones -- have only averaged about 4 yards per return after a combined eight attempts. Sheldon may have grabbed the attention of Tampa Bay's scouts and coaches with his 39-yard punt return against the Seattle Seahawks. He also made four catches during the preseason for 35 yards. When the Colts released him early this week to make room for former Texans running back Jonathan Wells, the team indicated that a return to Indianapolis wasn't out of the question according to Sheldon.
