Colts Make Move in Case Diem Can't Play

Indianapolis released a guard and promoted a tackle on Saturday, an indication of increased concern over starting right tackle Ryan Diem's availability.

ColtPower has learned from a source close to the NFL that Indianapolis has waived guard Matt Ulrich and promoted offensive tackle Daniel Federkeil to the roster for Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.

The late move is appears to be an indicator of concern over starting right tackle Ryan Diem's availability. Diem wasn't able to practice this week due to an abdomen injury and on Friday Colts head coach Tony Dungy said that Diem would be a game-time decision. That assessment obviously didn't improve today.

If Diem can't play, rookie Charlie Johnson will plug in for him as he did last Sunday for most of the game against the Eagles, and he would take on one of the league's most talented pass rushers, Kyle Vanden Bosch. Johnson performed well as part of a unit that helped Joseph Addai rush for his career-high as a Colt while scoring touchdowns. And the rookie and his line mates didn't allow a sack either.

The Colts were only carrying three offensive tackles on the roster including Diem. So if it's determined that he can't play, they definitely needed to promote someone from the practice squad for depth.

They had two to choose from -- Federkeil, who was an undrafted free agent this year, and Michael Toudouze, the Colts' fifth-round pick in this year's draft out of TCU.

The Colts opted for the 6-foot-6, 290-pounder who was a standout on the defensive line at the University of Calgary. Federkeil posted 111 career tackles, 20 for losses, and 13 sacks. He also had some playing time exposure on the offensive line during his collegiate career.

Ulrich, an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern back in 2005, has been on the team's practice squad off and on during his first two seasons. The Colts are likely to re-sign him to that squad again if he clears waivers on Monday.
