Ricky Proehl appeared on the "Movin' the Chains" show on NFL Sirius
radio along with hosts Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan and showed the value of the
having a 17-year veteran joining a relatively young Indianapolis team.
Proehl, who caught a pair of passes for 23 yards in relief of Brandon Stokley,
said that he took a pretty good lick after one of his catches.
"It's always good to get that first good hit out of the way," he
said. "Now I know I can still catch it and take a hit, so that was
good."
As for Stokley's injury, which has been reported as a ruptured Achilles
tendon that is likely to land him on the injured reserve list, Proehl was
clearly sympathetic.
"It's awful, he's worked hard to get healthy and was practicing well and
really helped me a lot too -- to get adjusted and to get up to speed with the
offense," he said. "To see him go down was kind of hard to swallow,
but that's one of the reasons they brought me here..."
But perhaps an even more important reason for bringing Proehl on board is
that the veteran, who has played in two Super Bowls, brings a good perspective
and voice to a relatively young team.
"We've got to rally amongst each other, and that's all we've got right
now. Right now to me -- obviously I've only been there two weeks -- but you're
going to find out who your players are and who you can go to war with,"
he said. "We've got a young team, and you see some guys getting
little nicks here and there. For me, only being there a couple weeks it was kind
of disheartening because you wonder if these guys are going to battle or are
they going to give up."
"Now we're going to find out what this football team's all about. I'm
hoping it's going to respond like I think they can," he said.
