The Colts need an infusion of youth and speed at wide receiver and, while Allison is loaded with talent, he may not have the rest of what it takes to be a star in the NFL.

Aundrae Allison
WR, East Carolina

The numbers: 6002 (6'0)/198 pounds/4.39 forty-time

2006 stats: 62-708-4 receiving, 2-1-34-1-0 passing, 4-16-0 punt returns, 5-(-10)-0 rushing, 2 tackles

The player: If you're tired of all the hard-working, intense prospects who just don't add up physically that the Colts have been looking at, you'll love Allison. The kid is a ridiculously talented athlete. He runs like a deer, leaps like an impala and catches, well, like a guy who can catch the ball really well. And there are other reasons to like Allison: He fires off the line like he was shot out of a gun, he can throw the deep ball accurately, knows how to get yards after the catch, dishes out a mean stiff-arm and — best of all — knows how to cut off his routes to help a struggling quarterback.

There are worries, though. He clearly doesn't give his all on every play and, although he flashes some talent in this area, normally gives a pretty relaxed effort as a blocker. But he looks like a third guard as a blocker when you compare it to his route running. His cuts are inexplicably round and his understanding of the tree is limited. And, despite being blessed with naturally soft hands, he'll drop a few, especially when a big safety is around. While all that may be a result of his subpar work ethic and just two years of Division I football, some have bandied about the opinion that he's not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Reminds me of: Troy Williamson, the Vikings' first-round pick in 2005 who has flashed talent, but hasn't really put it all together yet and may never be more than a role player.

How he fits: The Colts really felt the lack of a reliable slot receiver last season and are definitely looking for one. While Allison is really more of an outside guy, he has the talent to play the slot. The question remains, though, can he be depended upon? To play the slot in Tom Moore's offense, you have to be tough, determined and precise and Allison has yet to demonstrate any of those abilities.
