Indianapolis finally gets defensive, drafting Daymeion Hughes in the third round. | |||

With the 94th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts drafted University of California defensive back Daymeion Hughes. The Colts lost both Nick Harper and Jason David in the offseason and filled a glaring need with the selection of Hughes. Hughes, 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, started all 13 games for the Bears 2006 and racked up 72 tackles, 11 pass breakups and eight interceptions (two for touchdowns). For his efforts, he earned All-American honors and was named the Pac Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Hughes leaves California with the second-most interceptions in school history (15). Hughes disappointed with a 4.65 40 yard dash time at the NFL Combine, but is seemingly a perfect fit for Indianapolis’ Cover 2 scheme. Hughes was also effective in kick coverage for California. An art practice major, Hughes received the Ronnie Lott IMPACT Trophy in 2006, awarded to the top defensive player in the nation who exhibits leadership and integrity on and off the field. |
