PASSING OFFENSE: A-plus
What else is there to say? QB Peyton Manning completed 14-of-23 passes (60.9 percent) for 303 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception and was sacked just once as he distributed the football to six different receivers. TE Dallas Clark had a huge night, catching seven passes for 183 yards and a touchdown, which came on the first offensive play of the game for the Colts. Indianapolis averaged 12.3 yards per pass attempt.
RUSHING OFFENSE: B
Yes, the Colts ran for just 61 yards on 11 carries. Part of the problem was that Indianapolis wasn't on the field much in the game as Miami controlled the time of possession 45:07 to 14:53. The Colts ran off just 34 total plays to 82 for Miami. Lost in all that was the fact that the Colts averaged 5.5 yards per rushing attempt.
PASS DEFENSE: B
QB Chad Pennington hit on 22-of-33 passes for 183 yards, averaging just 4.7 yards per pass attempt. He was sacked twice, once by DE Robert Mathis and once by DE Dwight Freeney. The Colts were able to put some pressure on Pennington and make him move around in the pocket. Mathis also forced a fumble.
RUSH DEFENSE: D
Not much you can say when a team controls the game, for the most part, so well with its running game. Miami had 49 rushing attempts for 239 yards, including 136 by Wildcat operator Ronnie Brown. Brown also had a pair of rushing touchdowns. The Dolphins averaged 4.9 yards per rushing attempt.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B
P Pat McAfee handled both the punting and kickoffs for the Colts. McAfee averaged 48.3 yards on three punts while the Indianapolis kickoff coverage limited the Dolphins to 22.8 yards on four returns. PK Adam Vinatieri connected on both of his field goal attempts, hitting from 43 and 48 yards. KR Chad Simpson averaged 18 yards on five kickoff returns.
COACHING: B-plus
To be able to keep a team focused, especially offensively, during a game when the stats are so one-sided towards the opposing team merits mention. The Colts had the ball for only three plays in the third quarter. Miami won the time of possession battle, keeping the football for 45:07. But Indianapolis hung in and found a way to win the game despite having to overcome all those obstacles.
