The Colts called back seven of the players they recently cut and claimed a player off of waivers from the Giants to form their eight-man practice
squad on Sunday.
The eight players include wide receivers Trent Shelton and Aaron Brown,
quarterback Josh Betts, offensive linemen Sam Wilder and Joe Lobdell, defensive
end Travis Leitko, tight Gijon Robinson and RB DeCori Birmingham, who the team
claimed off of waivers from the Giants.
Birmingham, a former running back for the Arkansas Razorbacks, originally
entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots in 2005, but was
released in mid-July. He was signed by the Jets in August and competed for the
returns specialist role, handling both kickoffs and punt returns, but was
released a few weeks later.
In January of 2006, the 5-foot-9, 210-pound back signed with the 49ers and was
designated for NFL Europa, but he was released in April. Earlier this year,
Birmingham was signed by the Giants and was again designated for NFL Europa duty
this past spring. He went into training camp with New York but was cut on
August 22.
While playing for Arkansas, Birmingham finished his career fifth-highest
all-time for total yardage with 3,610 all-purpose yards.
Defensive end Travis Leitko and wide receiver Aaron Brown were both waived by
the Colts on August 28th when the team made their first cuts, so their inclusion
is a bit of a surprise when surveying the group of names.
The other five players on the squad were in the Colts' final round of cuts made
on Saturday. Wide receiver Trent Shelton had a terrific preseason that obviously
caught the attention of the coaching staff. Josh Betts returns for his second
season as the team's third quarterback.
The Colts will have a ninth player, defensive end Ben Ishola, also assigned to
the practice squad as an international development practice squad player. Unlike
the other eight, Ishola can't be activated to the team's roster this year due to
his special designation. Members of the eight-man practice squad can be signed
to the Colts active roster or the active roster of any NFL team throughout the
season.
