SD: Veteran WR Waived

Chris Chambers Profile

The San Diego Chargers have waived veteran WR Chris Chambers, the team announced Monday. Beginning on October 21, all vested veterans are subjected to waivers if they are released.

“There are a number of things that went into the decision,” head coach Norv Turner said. “The reason we’re able to do this is the play of (WR) Malcom (Floyd) and the way (WR/TE) Legedu Naanee is performing. Certainly there are a number of other things in terms of our football team that we need to address. Defensively and in the kicking game … we need to get some help.”

Chambers was on the final year of his contract at a base salary of $4.55 million. Players get paid over 17 weeks, so he's still owed roughly $2.4 million, and he's unlikely to get claimed by 4:00 PM ET on Tuesday. Chambers, because he's a vested veteran, can put in a claim for termination pay for the balance of his base salary since he was on the Chargers' roster after the first regular season game. According to the NFLPA, a player must claim termination pay between the end of the regular season and no later than February 1. If the claim is made before or after those dates it may not be valid.

Floyd, who is playing on his one-year restricted free agent tender, will be a restricted free agent again next season unless the NFL reaches a new collective bargaining agreement with their players before the start of free agency on March 5.
